Why do Auto Parts cost more from a Dealership than from places like O'Reilly's or Auto zone?

I called my local chevy dealer for a price on a new Fuel Pump and they wanted almost $50.00 more than other auto parts stores. Why do Auto Parts cost more from a Dealership than from places like O'Reilly's or Auto zone?
Sometimes you're paying for that special logo.

Example: A part for an Audi could cost twice as much

as the indentical part from a VW dealership.

Same engine--Same part.

Keep in mind: When a dealership isn't selling any vehicles (Like in a current soft economy) that they have to make their margins up on Parts and Service.

There are aftermarket shops that do make even better quality parts than you can get through the dealership---Jegs, etc.

If you're willing to do it yourself......Go to an auto parts store and save some $$$$.

The part will work perfectly fine or they wouldn't manufacture it. And it probably comes with a guarantee right on the box to make you feel all warm and fuzzy (Like in the movie Tommy Boy)

It's free enterprise.......Whoever has the best price probably wants my business the most.

Oh, and parts from Mexico........No problema.

Hey come to think of it.........VW makes cars there.

I wonder how many white breads in the burbs still think they're getting hecho en Germany instead of made in Mexico.

Sorry to pxxx on your wonder bread, Biff.

Well, it's kind of a toss up here! At the dealer, the part (most likely) will be the original manufacturer. However, if it's an older vehicle or one that's not made anymore, they will get an aftermarket part just like Auto Zone or O'reilly's do. And of course, they will mark it up because they got it for you!

At Auto Zone or O'Reilly's, the parts are aftermarket. Some aftermarket parts are just as good as the original. I've had a lot of aftermarket parts installed and not had any problems with them and hey, the $50 is better in my pocket than theirs! Why do Auto Parts cost more from a Dealership than from places like O'Reilly's or Auto zone?
Some of the other answers are right on, but the main reason is that THEY CAN and people will pay the premium. There is the belief that if it comes from the dealer, it has to be better, fit better, meet specs better, yada, yada. So people will pay a premium price based on this belief. Sometimes the belief is founded in fact, and sometimes it's not. A quart of oil bought at a dealership is not better than the same quart bought at 7-11.
There is a catch. General Motors sub-contracts thousands of parts out to suppliers. GM Parts are made to their strict specifications no matter where they're actually made. Take for instance AC-Delco radiator caps and thermostats sold at all GM Dealerships. Read the boxes carefully! These two parts are made off-shore at this very minute. All but the Professional Series AC-Delco Batteries are made in Mexico. Delphi is an automotive parts supplier hear in the USA.

Nearly all replacement auto parts store parts are now made off-shore weather we like it or not. In these cases you're paying for cheap un-unionized labor and parts made of inferior quality plastic and metal. Off-shore cast iron brake rotors are worse than awful. Why do Auto Parts cost more from a Dealership than from places like O'Reilly's or Auto zone?
Dealers sale original equipment. after market is just as good for instance you buy a car brand new and the battery goes out a year later. you buy a new duralast battery that last you 4 years. you can never determine the life of a part. some times the after market part doesn't last long at all. you might buy it today and it goes out tomorrow. One thing i can say though is you feel at ease because you have a lifetime warranty versus paying a 100 dollars more at the dealer and it goes out in a year and your out of pocket again. Me personally I always shop at my local auto parts and do it myself. I have purchased many parts from the dealer only because the auto parts couldn't get it. I love dealer parts OEM. but I trust my auto zone and O'Reilly's warranties. I can walk in auto zone and swap out for free brakes batteries, starter and alternator you name it I got a warranty. and not to mention I got like a million parts under warranty and not to mention every 5 times I make a purchase I get 20 dollars. dealer don't do that. My car has a lot money in after market parts under the hood but I drive it every day with no problems. I'm sorry for lying my starter has been dragging a lot lately so I think I will go swap it out and get a new one for free.
because your buying a genuine replacement part from the dealer and not a part made in china, If your replacing the fuel pump I would recommend that you pay the extra money and get the genuine replacement part from GM as some of the aftermarket fuel pumps don't last and it's too big a job to be doing very often.
#1 - the dealer only carried the factory OEM parts. Autozone and other store may or may not live up to OEM spec

#2 - the dealer is the dealer. They are more "trusted" so they can charge a premium.

Good Luck...
Original parts that are made from Ford, Chevy, etc vs Aftermarket parts, Often made in Mexico.
Its also a higher markup. There may be parts you can only get from them, so you have no choice.
Better quality at the dealership.
the brand names and/or volume of sales are different.
More paperwork, greed
b/c they are better quality
It's made by GM not some other country%26gt;
